The JVC GZ-MC500 Digital Camcorder is the first of its kind, an MPEG-2 hard disk camcorder that captures high-quality digital still images and movies to a 4GB Microdrive. At the heart of the camcorder's brilliant imaging is its 5 Megapixel 3CCD configuration, Megabrid Engine, and 3-D Noise Reduction.
The pocket-sized camcorder also includes a built-in pop-up flash, SD slot, rotating handgrip, and a digital image stabilizer. Advanced Photo Functions such as an Auto Exposure Dial and a Manual Focus Ring add another level of consumer control. Agile and innovative, the GZ-MC500 merges the guts of a high-end digital still camera with the features of a MiniDV camera to create an advanced piece of camcorder convenience.
Key Features
• 5 Megapixel 3CCD
The GZ-MC500 dedicates a 1/4.5", 1.33 Megapixel CCD to each red, green and blue color. In Video Mode, 691,200 pixels are effective in each CCD. Still images are snapped in resolutions as high as 2560 x 1920. The 3CCD configuration also pixel-shifts the green pixel locations by 1/2 pixel. This allows the camcorder to receive image data from twice as many pixel locations, both horizontally and vertically. The end result is incredibly high detail and astonishingly rich color re-creation.
• Megabrid Engine
The Megabrid Engine applies separate, optimized processing to moving and still images. This results in a high signal-to-noise ratio for videos (even in low light conditions), as well as clear, high-resolution still images that deliver beautiful quality prints. RGB-based processing also ensures rich, realistic color reproduction.
• 3-D Noise Reduction
This frame-based noise reduction provides more accurate noise reduction by using twice the visual information of conventional field-based reduction engines. It reduces video noise by up to 30 percent in low light, for a 2dB improvement in signal-to-noise ratio. This way, even in low light situations, 3-D Noise Reduction is able to minimize noise while maintaining high picture quality.
• MPEG-2 Codec Chip
The GZ-MC500's uses the MPEG-2 Codec Chip to compress its data and record video at a DVD-quality bit-rate of 8.88 Mbps. It also records Dolby Digital Audio.
• Advanced Photo Functions
Advanced Photo Functions on the GZ-M500 include: Manual Focus Ring, Program Auto Exposure dial, Auto Exposure bracketing, and Real Time Histogram Display.
• Microdrive and Floating Suspension System
The GZ-MC500's 4GB, matchbook-sized microdrive lets you record up to one hour of MPEG-2 quality moving picture, or up to 9999 digital stills. A Floating Suspension System utilizes 14 polymer shock absorbers to "float" the hard drive and protect against the shocks and jolts of handheld recording.
• Rotating Grip
The design of the GZ-MC500 allows you to rotate the handgrip 45 degrees to better suit your hand and differing shooting angles/conditions.
• Built-In Pop-Up Auto Flash
The GZ-MC500's built-in pop-up flash allows you to snap high-quality digital stills in darkness.
• 16:9 Recording Mode
The GZ-MC500 can record video in 16:9 aspect ratio to re-create the feel of an actual, big-screen movie.
• Compatible Media
An SD slot expands your digital storage options, allowing you to store data on an SD or CompactFlash card.
• CyberLink DVD Solution
The CyberLink bundled software contains three programs (PowerProducer, PowerDVD and PowerDirection), which assist you in creating and distributing your videos/stills onto DVDs and a variety of other digital file formats.
• Voice Recording
Use the camcorder's built-in mic to record audio notes and meetings as WAV files, in 48kHz/16-bit PCM stereo sound.
